Overhead Sit-up

Exercise Summary

Make sure to us this version of sit-ups to add a little variety to workout and to target your entire core.

You can use a variety of equipment to perform overhead sit-ups.  Feel free to try using: medicine balls, dumbbells, kettlebells, barbell, and sandbags.  Be sure to test out different pieces of equipment to see how it changes the exercise and the difficulty of the movement.

To perform:

  1. Lay flat on your back with your legs straight and your entire leg touching the floor – make sure that your legs stay flat on the floor for the entire movement

  2. Hold the medicine ball (or whatever piece of equipment you are using) over your chest with your arms straight

  3. Making sure that your back stays straight and flat for the entire range of motion, sit-up driving the medicine ball straight up to the ceiling

  4. At the “top” of the movement the medicine ball as well as your wrists, elbows, ears, shoulders, and hips should be in a straight line

  5. Slowly reverse the movement returning to the floor

  6. Repeat for the required number of repetitions
