Technique Tip: Engaged Lats
Having the incorrect posture and not properly engaging the muscles required to perform an exercise can lead to an increased risk of injury. One simple way to protect yourself is by properly engaging your lats (or your shoulder blades.) This is essential on exercises such as the kettlebell swing and kettlebell deadlift.
To perform:
Set up as if you are going to perform a kettlebell deadlift or simply grip the kettlebell like you see here.
Flatten your back and stick your butt out
Squeeze your shoulder blades down and back. Do this while pulling your shoulders away from your ears
Flex your lats (just underneath your arm pits) as if somebody were trying to tickle you
